Carl Sirio, an internist and critical care physician at Allegheny General Hospital, was elected on Tuesday to a four-year term on the board of trustees of the American Medical Association.

"I value this opportunity to work to improve American medicine on behalf of all physicians and the patients we serve," Dr. Sirio said in a statement from the AMA, which is meeting in Chicago.

Dr. Sirio, of Fox Chapel, has served on the AMA Council on Medical Education for eight years. He was instrumental in creating the Pittsburgh Regional Healthcare Initiative, a group of physicians and hospitals from 40 institutions working to improve patient care and safety.
