An East Liberty woman was arraigned Saturday on two charges of endangering the welfare of a child after police discovered her 9-year-old daughter and 1-month-old grandson locked inside her Rural Street home Friday afternoon.
Mariamecq Diane, 42, was released on her own recognizance. City police also obtained an arrest warrant for her daughter, 18-year-old Nara Kaba, who was supposed to be caring for the children, Ms. Diane told police.
According to a criminal complaint, the 9-year-old, Fatim Kaba, called 911 and hung up at some point Friday. After tracing the call, police arrived at the home and knocked on the door at around 5:30 p.m. Fatim said told officers the door was locked from the inside and that she was home alone with her 1-month-old nephew, Lashawn Kaba.
Firefighters eventually made entry and the children were transported to Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC for examination.
They were placed in the custody of the Allegheny County Children, Youth and Family Services agency.
Ms. Diane later told police that she left the children with her 18-year-old daughter Nara at around 8 a.m. Friday when she left for work. She said she knew Nara had to go to school, but did not think she would leave the children alone.
