A six-level parking garage across from Mellon Arena, where a large concrete beam cracked and buckled, will not reopen.
The garage, at 1200 Centre Ave., is slated for demolition later this year in conjunction with construction of the new arena. The structure was closed Friday night after a construction worker discovered the defective beam on the third level.
Some 200 to 300 vehicles have been parking each day in the garage owned by Lemieux Development LP, an affiliate of the Penguins.
The city-Allegheny County Sports & Exhibition Authority plans to issue bids in mid-June to demolish the garage and the adjacent St. Francis Central Hospital.
Although the garage was full of cars at the time of the beam collapse Friday, none was damaged and no one was injured.
