Aliquippa plans winter art festival

Wednesday, January 17, 2001

By Mary Thomas, Post-Gazette Art Critic

The title says it all: "Cycle 7: Aliquippa Embraces Art -- First Winter Exhibition." The event, which opens with a free, public reception from 7 to 10 p.m. Saturday, expands art's presence on Franklin Avenue beyond the annual summer festival.

When a group of artists approached the Aliquippa Alliance for Unity and Development with the idea for an off-season exhibition, development specialist Chris Taylor said it was reminiscent of the way artist Michelle Illuminato began the summer festival eight years ago.

"It seemed so right to me," he added, that he gave the group the go-ahead.

Participating are Pittsburgh artists Corey Ballard, Jay DelGreco, Eric Dickman, Christopher O'Connell and Gina Tamburri, Philadelphia artist Stephen Shade and New York artist Justin Pearlman.

The exhibition will be in the old G.C. Murphy Building, 464 Franklin Ave.

Hours are 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday and Jan. 27 and 28.
