TOWNS

Brentwood

The borough has a receptacle in the municipal parking lot for youths to deposit aluminum cans, which can be redeemed later for cash to help defray construction and maintenance of a skateboard park, Mayor Ken Lockhart said.

Whitehall

A shuttle service to Whitehall Public Library for refugee residents of Prospect Park apartments will run each Wednesday evening during the school year starting Sept. 18.

The bus will leave the apartments at 6:30 p.m., arriving at the library at 7 p.m. It returns from the library at 8:30 p.m. and arrives at 9 p.m. at the apartments.

Expenses for the trips will be covered by the Whitehall Lions Club, Friends of the Whitehall Library and Tri-State Mobile X-Ray. Fliers for the refugees are being printed in Vietnamese, Croatian and Arabic, library director Lee Boyd said.

Action on a proposed home occupation ordinance planned for tonight has been postponed to allow the borough's planning commission to review the document drafted by the borough solicitor.

Borough Manager Jim Leventry said the commission wanted assurance that the proposed law complies with revised state regulations on home occupations.

The ordinance would legalize home-based occupations now prohibited in the borough and would establish strict guidelines for permitted occupations.

Borough officials believe technological advances have enabled individuals to use computers to work from their homes, and they recognize a need to place restrictions on acceptable activities to limit their impact on adjacent property owners.

A borough gift shop is in the preliminary planning stages and may take real shape after this year's Aug. 31 Community Day celebration.

Councilman Harold Berkoben, who introduced the idea, said a vendor will provide samples of shirts and hats bearing the borough logo at a booth at the event.

Depending on interest and orders generated, Berkoben indicated that a gift shop in the borough building could be in place before the holidays.

SCHOOLS

Baldwin-Whitehall

A high school orientation for incoming ninth-graders and new students is scheduled from 9 to 10 a.m. Aug. 19.

A brief informational session will be followed by a self-led tour of the building. Parents are invited to attend.
