State grants available to lessen cost of hybrid car

Wednesday, April 04, 2001

By Bob Podurgiel

Although Robert Moll probably would have bought his hybrid Toyota Prius without extra incentives, Pennsylvania officials made buying the car easier by awarding him a $1,500 grant through its Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant Program.

Such money also is available to any company, individual, nonprofit group, local government or school district that wants to buy a hybrid gas-electric car or another alternative-fuel vehicle.

About $7 million was still available in mid-February.

The grants will pay for 30 percent of the added cost to buy an alternative-fuel vehicle, or to convert a standard vehicle to run on an alternate fuel such as liquefied natural gas.

As part of his grant proposal, Moll offered to promote his vehicle to environmental and conservation groups in the South suburbs. But promoting a vehicle or technology is not necessary to receive a grant.

The state Department of Environmental Protection says on its Web site that the program's goals are to reduce pollution and dependence on foreign oil.

The application and the instructions to apply for a grant are available by searching on DEP's Web site at http://www.dep.state.pa.us for Alternative Fuels Incentive Grant Program.
