Anthony Cugini has resigned from his post as director of the National Energy Technology Laboratory, three weeks after being placed on administrative leave.
Employees were notified that Mr. Cugini left his position effective Oct. 11.
NETL, the fossil fuel research and development arm of the U.S. Department of Energy, confirmed on Sept. 21 that Mr. Cugini was replaced by his deputy Scott Klara while on leave. Officials did not give a reason for the sudden move, saying it's policy not to comment on personnel matters.
Mr. Klara will remain as acting director until a new chief is named.
Mr. Cugini has been NETL's director since April 2010. He has spent more than 25 years with the organization.
