NY Mayor Michael Bloomberg Announces Plans for September 11th Commemoration

Sail for America Memorial Event - In New York Harbor, will feature sailors from across the nation flying personalized flags in memory of WTC victims Saturday, Sept. 14 and Sunday, Sept. 15.

"Stars, Stripes & Skates" - Figure skating exhibition by Olympic and World Champion skaters, to benefit 9-11 victims At Madison Square Garden Friday, September 20 at 8 p.m. • brave new world - A three-day theater marathon is planned for Sept. 9-11 at New York's Town Hall, in which writers, directors, and performers will "reflect upon and respond to the tragic events of Sept. 11." There will be three evening performances and a Sept. 11 matinee, to be made up of 50 new plays and songs. The matinee will include works written by children affected by the attacks.

Free Outdoor Concert - "A Requiem for September 11" to be Presented by the NJSO at Liberty State Park - The New Jersey Symphony Orchestra, in partnership with Thirteen/WNET, Johnson & Johnson, Chubb Group of Insurance Companies, and New Jersey Governor James E. McGreevey, will present a free outdoor performance of Giuseppe Verdi's Requiem on Wednesday, September 11th at Liberty State Park beginning at 7:00pm. The performance, with lower Manhattan in the background, is being produced for national telecast on PBS by Thirteen/WNET New York. It will be broadcast on public television stations nationwide at 10pm that evening.

Mayor and Chief Executive outline September 11 remembrance plans - Pittsburgh Mayor Murphy and Allegheny County Chief Executive Roddey announce plans for the 1-year anniversary of the tragic events of September 11.

A Concert for Heroes: Mahler's "Resurrection" Symphony - This special memorial concert pays tribute to the many heroes of September 11, 2001, expressing grief, hope, and triumph through Gustav Mahler's Symphony No. 2 in C minor, known as the "Resurrection" symphony. Net proceeds benefit the Somerset County Flight 93 Memorial Fund.

Cities Remember 9-11 - This site from the U.S. Conference of Mayors allows you to find out what 225 cities around the nation are doing to commemorate the one-year anniversary of 9/11.

Cities, Towns Plan September 11 Remembrance Events - The National League of Cities is collecting a list of events planned by cities.

Face of America 2002 - World T.E.A.M. Sports is conducting a 3-day bike ride from Ground Zero to Washington, DC.

Day of Unity and Prayer - this web site is hosted by the Council on American-Islamic Relations. From the home page, "It is imperative that all Americans come together on the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks to show that we are united as a nation and reject efforts by any parties, whether overseas or within our borders, to divide our nation along religious or ethnic lines. IAFC Issues Recommendation for September 11 Remembrance - The International Association of Fire Chiefs is issuing a nationwide call for all fire departments in America to simultaneously mark the first anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 and the subsequent losses suffered at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and in Pennsylvania.

Remembering the Fallen of 2001 - Firehouse.com is compiling information, links and logistical resources for the three major memorial services this Fall in honor of the fallen heroes of 2001, including those lost at the World Trade Center. These ceremonies are taking place in New York City, Washington, D.C. and Colorado Springs, Colorado.

World Trade Center traveling memorial - The Port Authority World Trade Center Traveling Memorial, Inc. is a Nonprofit Corporation in the State of New Jersey. The Traveling Memorial consists of a Monaco Motorhome, respectfully transformed into a Memorial on wheels - emblazoned with the names of 37 Port Authority Police Officers, 38 Civilian Employees of the Port Authority, 23 New York City Police Officers, and, Sirius, the Port Authority Police K-9 who died on that tragic day. It is also a Mobile Exhibit containing an extensive pictorial display, a video documentary, and numerous genuine artifacts recovered from the site of the World Trade Center known as Ground Zero, including police car doors, airplane fragments, and, much more. The Memorial is a tribute to all victims including those at The Pentagon, and the four hijacked aircraft,

WTC Memorial Quilt - As of 8-21-02, they had received 18,988 blocks. You can view completed panels here. A tour is planned for the future.

Pentagon Memorial - The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has announced plans for an open competition to design an outdoor memorial to the victims of the September 11 attack on the Pentagon. The memorial will occupy a site near the point of impact. Submissions are due in September.

flt93memorial.org - This site has been commissioned by the Somerset County Commissioners, Somerset, PA with the purpose of providing one place for current news and factual information about Flight 93 and the memorial effort.

September 11th National Memorial Plan - The Oak Ridge High School Student Council in Oak Ridge, Tennessee wants "to create a memorial that America does not have to go and visit, but a memorial that will go to America. We want to recycle the steel of the World Trade Center for a higher purpose than merely scrapping it. We want to create a tangible reminder of the tragic events of that Tuesday and show America that it happened to all of us. We want the bones of the buildings to be preserved and accessible in the daily lives of America's youth both now and long into the future. We want to steel America to meet the challenge of this world menace and to unite to make sure nothing like this ever happens again. We want to use the steel of the World Trade Center to create memorial displays in every cooperating high school in the nation."

An American Quilt - An American Quilt, Inc. is a grass-roots, not-for-profit organization responding to the tragic losses suffered in the terrorist attack of September 11, 2001 and its aftermath. The families, friends and survivors of those who were lost in the tragedies of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon, United Airlines Flight 93 and those of our brave military who died fighting in Afghanistan are invited to create a fabric/collage panel, which will be woven into a large, multiple-panel quilt - An American Quilt.

Portrait Memorial Foundation - The Portrait Memorial Foundation was established to secure the production, preservation and permanent display of a work of art consisting of portraits of the victims of the attacks of September 11, 2001. The artist Michael DeMinico will produce all the portraits in oil on linen. At the artists suggestion, notice of the project was published in the New York Times, April 21st, 2002, so the families would have the opportunity to comment upon the project. The artists source for these portrait will be the New York Times data base, unless the families wish to provide other photographs.

September 11 memorial garden - Design plans for a permanent memorial garden in London to those who lost their lives in the United States on 11 September 2001 have been announced. Pictures of Grosvenor Square Gardens; a preliminary sketch for the design; and an architectural plan of the scheme are available.

Electronic memorials and tributes

World Trade Center & Pentagon Memorial - In addition to numerous links to September 11th-related sites, this site includes a collection of musical tributes and a discussion board.

The Sonic Memorial Project - The public radio community across America is joining together to create a Sonic Memorial to commemorate and chronicle the life & history of the World Trade Center and the events before, during and after September 11, 2001. They are collecting audio artifacts of all kinds - sound that captures the life and spirit of the World Trade Center's three-decade history as well as sound related to the events of September 11, 2001.

The Sept. 11 Memorial Quilt Web site - From the web page - "We are building a tribute to all the people lost in the attacks of September 11, 2001 - those we knew, those we didn't, and those we would aspire to be. This quilt is an expression of sorrow & remembrance, and we'd like you to become a part of it. Just give us your name, your message, and the place you call home. We will combine your information with the work of our fine artists to create a one-of-a-kind patch. Your patch will be added to the quilt, building a unique website which will stand as a testament to our strength, our unity, and our commitment to freedom."

UAL Flight 93 Memorial Chapel - is a spiritual memorial and perpetual tribute in honor of the Heroes of UAL Flight 93, and all others who perished September 11, 2001. The founder and Director-Curator is Reverend Alphonse T. Mascherino, an ordained Catholic priest.

Flight 93 Memorial Information Center - From the home page, "We are not in charge of the Flight 93 Memorial being planned by the Somerset County Commissioners. We are simply caring Americans who began establishing this website in mid-September of 2001, because we firmly believe that a memorial should be built at the crash site of United Airlines Flight 93--near Shanksville, Pennsylvania--where 40 brave souls fought armed terrorists to save the lives of others and some unknown national landmark."

Flight 93 Memorial - is a memorial to those who died on Flight 93. It features photos and information on the Flight 93 passengers and crew, a list of memorial funds, links to news articles (through 12-25-01 only), and links to other Flight 93 memorial sites.

The Legacy of Flight 93 - A tribute page maintained by Robert Young. In addition to links to stories, websites and biographical information on the passengers and crew, this site offers an update service to notify you when new material gets posted.

Witness and Response: September 11 Acquisitions at the Library of Congress - Even in the midst of the initial chaos of the horrific events of September 11, 2001, the Library of Congress began collecting materials documenting the attacks. Since that time, the Library has been amassing material through its public service divisions and overseas offices. On September 7, an exhibition and Web site of selections from this material will open.

Legacy.com plans to keep popular 9/11 memorial online indefinitely - This "unparalleled collection of tributes" continues to expand as new guest book entries are added each day. To date, more than 2 million users have visited the site. More than 100,000 entries have been submitted to the guest books.

Naming the Nightmare: The Journey Back From 9/11 - What's in the News presents a special-edition four part national televised series talking to elementary school children and their families about the aftermath of September 11, how we begin to understand it and how we relate to one another. These four independent programs have been packaged together to provide parents and teachers with information in response to the events of 9/11. Starting Sept. 8, What's in the News will offer this series and accompanying teaching materials through a satellite feed and a Web site.

Remember September 11th - is a single-source online location with more than 100 lesson plans and over 60 links to support materials, resources, and information about that tragic day and our nation. The site includes submissions from the teachers' union's members and other sources, including the Public Broadcasting Service's "America Responds" and the American Red Cross' "Facing Fear," part of that organization's "Masters of Disaster" teaching series.

9/11 As History - The project includes 16 lesson plans.

Remembering September 11 - The National Association of School Psychologists reminds teachers that not all schools were similarly affected by Sept. 11, and urges educators to carefully plan any memorial service.
