Taking care of business

There may be no other city in the United States that has gone through a more impressive revitalization. Pittsburgh, the “steel city” that once relied on heavy industry, is now a center for the high technology, health care, and financial industries. The people of Pittsburgh are very excited about what lies ahead for their hometown, and for good reason. With two new stadiums, expansion projects for the convention center and science center, and being named one of two finalists for the country’s first-ever Maglev train, Pittsburgh may be on the verge of its third renaissance in the past 100 years.

Its leadership in the fields of high technology, medicine, education and finance reinforces Pittsburgh’s ranking as a top corporate market. Pittsburgh is a mecca for big business; seven Fortune 500 companies call us home. Pittsburgh features world-class hospitals and a health-care industry that is among the largest employers in town. Pittsburgh is also a center for banking, being the headquarters of two of the 50 largest banks in the United States. One does not have to be a billion-dollar company to enjoy Pittsburgh’s business-friendly environment, however. VentureWire, in March 2001, ranked Pittsburgh one of the top 20 metropolitan areas for venture capital investment.

Whether they are strolling through the boutiques of Shadyside or battling the crowds at one of the area’s many malls, Pittsburghers love to go shopping. According to Demographics USA, last year saw $27 billion worth of sales go through the registers of the area’s merchants. Of this, $16 billion of this was in Pittsburgh’s home county, Allegheny County, which led every other county in the state.
