Close-Up 2003: A look back at news and newsmakers

From the War in Iraq to the birth of sextuplets, thousands of stories fought for our attention in 2003.

Sometimes the constant deluge of facts, figures, people and problems can seem overwhelming.

For two weeks at the end of the year, Post-Gazette reporters stepped back from the press of daily deadline pressure to revisit some of the major news and newsmakers of 2003.

In a year that seemed to have its fair share of depressing headlines, they found many examples of the resiliency of the human spirit, from the positive outlook of a Boy Scout leader paralyzed in a Downtown robbery, to the widow of Mister Rogers getting support from her neighborhood, to the silver lining in the nation's largest electrical blackout.
