The National Urban League conference in Pittsburgh continues. Daily registration is available as are tickets for individual luncheons and galas.
All events are at David L. Lawrence Convention Center, Downtown, unless noted. Conference highlights include:
Today (Friday, July 25, 2003)
Registration continues for Urban League Young Professionals' Leadership Institute, with 2:30 p.m. session on financial literacy and a 7 p.m. party on the Roberto Clemente Bridge.
NULITES, a youth leadership summit, holds business tours and talent camp activities.
Saturday
Young Professionals sessions discuss political participation and education, with 9 p.m. gala at Dowe's on Ninth.
NULITES has sessions on senior year and prepping for success.
Urban League regional delegates meet.
Career Fair, free to the public, opens at noon. It ends Monday.
Art Expo, featuring the works of 27 local sculptors, painters, fiber artists, opens and continues through Wednesday. It is free.
African Marketplace, featuring Pittsburgh vendors, and the Opportunity Showcase open today and continue through Wednesday. Both are free.
Sunday
• 9 a.m., family session features the Rev. Frederick Haynes of Dallas.
• 11:30 a.m., NULITES Achievement Matters Rally is held.
• 12:30 p.m., Council of Urban League Guild Luncheon features neurosurgeon Ben Carson.
• 6 p.m., keynote address is by National Urban League President Marc Morial.
Health Pavilion, free to the public, opens during the day and ends on Tuesday.
Monday
• 9 a.m., plenary with Elijah Cummings, chairman of Congressional Black Caucus.
• 10:15 a.m., Rod Paige, U.S. secretary of education, speaks.
• 12:30 p.m., luncheon features Willie Gary, chief executive officer of MBC Television Network.
• 3 p.m., plenary on civil rights features Jesse Jackson Sr. and U.S. Rep. Harold Ford Jr.
• 8 p.m., concert features Stephanie Mills and Frankie Beverly and Maze, at Heinz Hall.
Tuesday
• 9 a.m., plenary on state of the black family, features University of Pittsburgh's Larry Davis and New York University professor Walter Stafford.
• 10:30 a.m., workshops focus on economic empowerment.
• 3 p.m., roundtable discussion on housing is held.
• 3 p.m., plenary on 21st-century relationships features minister and author Michael Eric Dyson, author Harriet Cole and author Eric Jerome Dickey.
• 8 p.m., Three Mo' Tenors perform at Heinz Hall.
Wednesday
• 9 a.m., "The Future of Affirmative Action" features journalist George Curry and Jonathan Alger, assistant general counsel at University of Michigan.
• Noon luncheon has Judge Glenda Hatchett as speaker.
• 7:30 p.m., Whitney M. Young Jr. Dinner closes conference.
Other free events: Exhibit of photography by Charles "Teenie" Harris and other local black photographers, compiled by the African American Cultural Center, on display in gallery at 937 Liberty Ave. through Aug. 2. Open Mondays through Fridays, noon to 6 p.m.; weekends, noon to 4 p.m.
