Western Pa. Class of 2003 National Merit Scholarships

The National Merit Scholarship Corp. has announced about 8,000 scholarships sponsored by the National Merit program, corporations and colleges and universities.

The 8,000 were picked from about 15,000 finalists who were chosen based on their scores on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test.

The most recent awards were announced yesterday for 1,950 members of the high school Class of 2003 who received college-sponsored awards. Each award amounts to $500 to $2,000 annually for up to four years of undergraduate study.

They are:

Allegheny County: John Blazeck, Mt. Lebanon High School, University of Florida; Jeffrey Gardner, Allderdice, Kenyon College; Amanda Kennard, Allderdice, New York University; Ann Weisberg, Fox Chapel Area, George Washington University; Emily Testa, North Allegheny, Miami University; and Jacob Ramsey, North Allegheny, University of Florida.

Butler County: Erin Black, Knoch, Messiah College.

Beaver County: Elizabeth M. Fedor-owicz, Hopewell, American University.

Others who won college-sponsored awards announced earlier are:

Allegheny County: Emily Karrs, Pine-Richland, George Washington University; Laura Napoli, Moon Area, New York University; Caroline Broome, Schenley, Washington University; Leah Falk, Schenley, Oberlin College; Fanny Kippelen, Upper St. Clair, Penn State University; Mark Gabbard, Upper St. Clair, Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University; Carl Rubin, Upper St. Clair, Carleton College; Max Glick, Mt. Lebanon, Rice University; Jeremy Landen, Mt. Lebanon, New York University; Michaela Palchick, Mt. Lebanon, Macalester College.

Butler County: Nathan Edwards, Knoch, Northwestern University.

Westmoreland County: Kiran Malhotra, Franklin Regional, New York University, and Melissa Ising, Penn-Trafford, Oberlin College.

Washington County: James Piotrowski, California Area, Case Western Reserve University.

The 2,500 who are officially called "National Merit Scholars" won $2,500 scholarships through the National Merit Scholarship Corp. They include:

Allegheny County: Melissa Gottron, North Allegheny; Alexander Greenwood, Deer Lakes; Benjamin Nylund, a home schooler in Bethel Park; Evan Mallory and David Flaherty, Sewickley Academy; Lauren Hauser, Kesi Chen and Evan Harrison, The Ellis School; Rachel Alexander, Winchester Thurston; Andrew Bartholomew and Matthew Meisel, Allderdice; Alexis Brownell, Peabody; Mara Horwitz, Schenley; Elizabeth Miller, Kunal Rambhia, Daniel Weller and Louis Williams, Upper St. Clair; Marisa Pacella, Keystone Oaks; Brian Simanek, Central Catholic; Nicole Zevola, Baldwin; Rena Xu, North Allegheny.

Butler County: Rebecca Miller, Butler Area High School.

Washington County: Kevin Osow-ski and Nicholas Vidnovic, Peters.

Westmoreland County: Henry DeYoung, Franklin Regional

The corporate scholarships to 1,100 high school seniors range from $500 to $10,000 per year. Winners of those corporate awards include:
