State police seeking recruits

Friday, June 06, 2003

By Johnna A. Pro, Post-Gazette Staff Writer

HARRISBURG -- In an increased effort to recruit more women and minorities into their ranks, Pennsylvania State Police will begin traveling to universities and communities in a high-tech bus aimed at showing off employment opportunities on the force.

"It's critical for our department's work force to reflect the diverse nature of the communities we serve," said Col. Jeffrey B. Miller, the state police commissioner.

"About 11 percent of our troopers are minorities and about 4 percent are females. That means there are literally thousands of highly qualified minorities and women in this state and elsewhere who have not considered the Pennsylvania State Police as a potential career. We want to change that."

Including cadets in the current class that will graduate next month, there are approximately 4,300 troopers, but because troopers can retire after 25 years of service, positions are generally available.

The 32-foot bus, which cost $174,000, was paid for through a grant from the Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency.

It was retrofitted by inmates in the state correction system and includes video, computer and interactive displays highlighting the work of state police at all levels.

"We look forward to getting on the road in search of the best and brightest," said Capt. Bill Conway, director of enlisted services.

Individuals seeking to enter the State Police Academy first must take a written exam. The next exam will be offered in January, and applications must be received by Nov. 17.

Applications are available through the Web site, www.psp.state.pa.us, or by calling the toll-free hot line at 1-877-722-2338.
