9/11: Western Pennsylvanians gather to remember

Throughout the week, area places of worship, schools, civic associations and other groups will be marking the first anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the United States with special memorial services, remembrances and events.

To intensify the meaning and impact of the ceremonies, many groups have arranged for start times to coincide with the very minute that terrorist planes struck the World Trade Center towers or the Pentagon, or that United Airlines Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville in Somerset County.

Listed below are religous services, college ceremonies, special events and arts programs occurring in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's circulation area to remember the events of last Sept. 11. All listed times refer to Wednesday, Sept. 11, unless other days are specified.

Places of worship
Brookline -- St. Mark Evangelical Lutheran Church, 933 Brookline Blvd. Memorial service, 7 p.m. Open for prayer and meditation from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m. Call 412-531-9575.

Downtown -- First Presbyterian Church, 320 Sixth Ave. "The Spirit of God and Freedom" concert, 4:30 p.m. today, featuring patriotic songs and hymns with organ, brass and choir, Edward Norman directing. Reduced-rate parking at the Mellon Square and Smithfield Street garages. Call 412-471-3436.

Highland Park -- St. Andrew's Episcopal Church, 5801 Hampton St. Service of Remembrance, 8 p.m. Call 412-661-1245.

East Liberty -- East Liberty Presbyterian Church, 116 Highland Ave. "Strength and Hope," from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesday. The workshop, coordinated by the American Red Cross with input from Pittsburgh area faith communities, was created to help residents who may be experiencing negative feelings as the anniversary of 9/11 occurs. Discussion will focus on how faith practices can be used to gain courage and healing. Call 412-263-3129.

On Wednesday, the sanctuary will be open all day for prayer and meditation, with church pastors leading four different prayer sessions from noon to 1 p.m.

Interfaith Vigil for Peace, with Taize Sung Prayer, 7 p.m. Cantor Shira Adler-Dickson of Temple Sinai and Kadir Gunduz, director of the Islamic Center of Pittsburgh, will join the vigil as all pray together as one voice to the One God. Also, a day-long visit with Farsijana R. Adeney-Risakotta and Jajat Burhanudin, a Christian/Muslim Interfaith Listening Team visiting from Indonesia, culminates in a Muslim/Christian Dialogue, 8:15 p.m. The event is sponsored by the ELPC Justice and Global Concerns Committee.

Lawrenceville -- Our Lady of the Angels Parish, St. Augustine worship site, 37th and Bandera streets. An Ecumenical Prayer Service, 3 p.m. today, followed by a community spaghetti dinner at 4 p.m. in St. Augustine auditorium, 220 37th St. Call 412-682-0929.

Shadyside -- Third Presbyterian Church, 5701 Fifth Ave. Memorial service, 7:30 to 8:30 p.m., includes readings by the Youth Group, songs, prayers and candles. Participants will add short messages to a Prayer Flag. Call 412-661-4710.

South Side -- St. Paul of the Cross Monastery and Retreat Center, 148 Monastery Ave. Special Mass in the Monastery Church, 8:49 a.m., followed by the Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 5:15 p.m. Benediction at 5:15 p.m. to pray for world peace. South Side -- St. John the Baptist Ukrainian Catholic Church, Seventh and Carson streets. Prayer service, also known as "Moleben," at 7:30 p.m.. Call 412-431-2531.

Strip District -- St. Stanislaus Church, 21st and Smallman streets. Christian prayer service, from noon to 12:25 p.m., featuring a bagpiper and reflections from representatives of local police, fire and emergency medical service units. A free will offering will be taken for Catholic Charities Relief Services.

Other Events
Downtown -- The Pittsburgh Symphony, Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave. "A Concert for Heroes: Mahler's 'Resurrection' Symphony," 7:30 p.m., benefit performance featuring the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, soprano Esther Heideman and mezzo-soprano Stacey Rishoi. Downtown -- Pittsburgh Cares, Oliver Building, 535 Smithfield St. The nonprofit organization that coordinates volunteer efforts for the Pittsburgh area will hold 15-minute orientation sessions on the hour from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. for anyone interested in making a difference in their community.

Pittsburgh Cares also will host a "Learning Luncheon," noon to 1 p.m., in the Oliver Building's second floor Partnership Center A. Guest speaker Michael Mingrone, director of Volunteer Resource Development at the American Red Cross, Southwestern Pennsylvania chapter, will discuss local and national aspects of the American Red Cross and how September 11, 2001, affected volunteerism. North Side -- The Andy Warhol Museum, 117 Sandusky St. Free screening, 7 p.m. Sept. 20, of "September Eleventh -- Eyewitness," ten film and video shorts that document the events of Sept. 11 by filmmakers and video makers who live in a two to three mile radius of the World Trade Center. Also, the exhibition "Strange Messenger: The Art of Patti Smith," which opens Sept. 27 and continues through Jan. 5, includes a series of large-scale drawings inspired by the events of Sept. 11. North Side -- The Pittsburgh Children's Museum, 10 Children's Way, Allegheny Square. Free admission, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., in memory of families affected by the national tragedy and as a means of providing a safe, engaging place for families to visit and spend quality time. Activities: "We're Holden Puppets" performances at noon and 1 p.m., patriotic puppet-making after the shows, and spin art. Call 412-322-5058.

North Side -- The Pittsburgh Pirates will honor hometown heroes for year-round dedication to their respective communities by giving any police officer, firefighter, emergency medical services staff member or 911 call center worker free admission to Saturday's 7:05 p.m. Pirates-Marlins contest or Sunday's 1:35 p.m. Pirates-Marlins game. To receive complimentary tickets, service personnel should bring a valid, current identification card to any of the PNC Park ticket windows after 8:30 a.m. on the preferred game day. Oakland -- The Islamic Center of Pittsburgh, 4100 Bigelow Blvd. Open House, 5 to 9 p.m., co-sponsored with the Attawheed Foundation. Participants may view posters about Islamic teachings, Islamic books, art and sample food from the Muslim world. The program also includes a moment of silence on the hour to remember the victims of terror in the U.S. and in the world. Call 412-682-5555.

Oakland -- Soldiers & Sailors National Military Museum & Memorial, 4141 Fifth Ave. Interactive exhibit "Reflections of 9-11," 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Wednesday to Saturday, in the museum's auditorium. On display will be uniforms representing those who are currently serving to protect national freedom as well as photos from Soldiers & Sailors' Sept. 14, 2001 "Attack on America" Remembrance Vigil, which was attended by approximately 12,000 visitors. Visitors are encouraged to bring to the exhibit, or write on-site, their personal reflections of 9/11, which will be archived and saved for future generations. Oakland -- Hosted by The Thomas Merton Center. Interfaith Vigil and Candlelight Walk for Peace, 7 p.m. Tuesday. Initial gathering in Schenley Park near Phipps Conservatory. After a brief opening prayer, participants will walk in silence and carry candles to the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning lawn, where representatives of various faiths will offer prayers for victims of the terrorist attacks.

Point Breeze -- Frick Art & Historical Center, 7227 Reynolds St. Visitors can write comments in a binder that was part of an installation, "Art is a Necessity," created in the fall in response to Sept. 11, which also included quotes from public arts figures and articles about the tragic event. More than 350 visitor comments were recorded through May. The book is returning to the Jacobean Room in The Frick Art Museum, which will be open for reading and contemplation throughout September. Hours: Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 6 p.m. Closed Mondays. Call 412-371-0600.

Shadyside -- Pittsburgh Center for the Arts, 6300 Fifth Avenue. Opening ceremony for "Aftermath: Stop the Voice of Hate," 6 p.m. Monday, family programs designed by the PCA Artist Ambassadors, an at-risk communities' youth artist program, and ASIA Pittsburgh, an arts organization founded in response to the Baumhammer hate crimes.

Visitors are asked to bring stones to decorate with their visions of peace and healing, and to create a page to include in the Aftermath artists' book and speak words of healing. For hours and event details, call 412-361-0873.

South Side -- Silver Eye Center for Photography, 1015 East Carson St. "Silver Eye Members Respond" exhibition, Tuesday to Sept. 28. Images that "invoke the many feelings that came on and after" Sept. 11. The exhibition opens with a free, public reception from 5 to 7 p. m. Tuesday. Call 412-431-1810.

Squirrel Hill -- Hosted by the Jewish Community Center of Greater Pittsburgh. Michael Hopkins, executive director of the Jewish Community Center MetroWest in West Orange, N.J., will present "Life After 9/11 in Suburban New York" at JCC of Greater Pittsburgh's 107th Annual Meeting at 7 p.m. Thursday in the Katz Performing Arts Center, Alex & Leona Robinson Building, 5738 Darlington Road. Uptown -- The Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, 1400 Locust St. Commemoration ceremony on front lawn, 10 a.m. City of Pittsburgh Emergency Medical Services Honor Guard will present the colors at 10 a.m., followed by a military flyover. Remarks by Pittsburgh Mercy Health System President and CEO Gregg G. Zoller will be followed by a reception in the Sister M. Ferdinand Clark Auditorium, Side B. The Most Reverend William J. Bellevue -- The Church of the Assumption will host the North Boroughs service of remembrance featuring a joint choir, organ, orchestra and soloists in the presentation of "Requiem" by Gabriel Faure at 7:30 p.m. The service will honor local police, firefighter and emergency personnel. Cranberry -- Cornerstone Church, which meets for worship at Rowan Elementary School, 8051 Rowan Road, will hold a memorial service at 10 a.m. today with special music in honor of those who died and a message of hope presented by Pastor Gary A. Shockley. Call 877-528-6738.

Cranberry -- Dutilh United Methodist Church and Cornerstone United Methodist Church will hold a joint service at 7 p.m. at Dutilh United Methodist, 1270 Dutilh Road. A blend of music, scripture and prayer will include leadership from several community churches and groups. Call 724-776-1094.

Fox Chapel -- The Fox Chapel Ministerium is sponsoring the Community-Wide 9/11 Interfaith Memorial Service at 7:30 p.m. at the Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 1610 Powers Run Road. New Sewickley -- St. John's United Evangelical Protestant Church, two miles west of Zelienople on Route 68, will hold a service at 8 p.m. with prayer, patriotic hymns and more. Those in attendance will received a "Fallen But Not Forgotten" booklet. Call 724-452-6941.

Ohio Township -- Christ Church at Grove Farm, 249 Duff Road, will hold a service at 7 p.m. It will include a video tribute, a flag procession, prayers and music by the chancel choir. Call 412-766-2973.

Richland -- First Presbyterian Church of Bakerstown, Route 8 at Heckert Road, will hold a service at 7 p.m. with scripture, music, prayer and the lighting of candles. No scenes of the devastation of 9/11 will be used. Call 724-443-1555.

Ross -- Hiland Presbyterian Church, 845 Perry Highway, will hold a community worship service at 7:30 p.m. Congregations included are St. John's Evangelical Lutheran, Korean United Presbyterian and Northmont United Presbyterian. The service will include choirs of each church, prayers for local public service officers and a 6-8 minute video clip of the 9/11 events. Call 412-364-6626.

Butler -- The National American Legion and Local Post 117 will hold an observance at noon at the Diamond, across from the Butler County courthouse.

Butler -- Butler community churches and civic leaders will hold a ceremony to honor the area's police, fire, military and airlines at 7 p.m. at Butler Area Senior High School, 165 New Castle Road.

Cranberry -- Cranberry Township Municipal Center, 2525 Rochester Road. Memorial ceremony, 8 a.m. The Veterans of Foreign Wars will provide a Flag Honor Guard, the Rev. Thomas Thornton of Cranberry United Presbyterian Church will offer a prayer, and Township Supervisor Dick Hadley will speak. Call 724-776-4806, Ext. 1103.

Marshall -- The Marshall Township Republican Organization will sponsor a free nonpartisan presentation at 8 p.m. Thursday at the Four Points Sheraton Hotel, 910 Sheraton Drive. Schuyler Foerster, president of the World Affairs Council of Pittsburgh and national vice chairman of the World Affairs Councils of America, will speak on "9/11 and the War on Terrorism: Lessons, Challenges and Prospects for U.S. Policy." Ross -- Northway Mall, McKnight Road, will sell the Sept. 11 "Hearts of Steel" bracelets, recognizing the heroic actions of Flight 93, on the upper level next to Dick's Sporting Goods. Cost is $10 per bracelet with proceeds benefiting the United Airlines Flight 93 Memorial Fund. Mall hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Sarver -- "Rock 'n' Roll for Heroes," a memorial event for the Heroes of Flight 93, will be held from 6 p.m. to midnight at Peter B's Bar & Grill, 111 Rock 'n' Roll Lane. Tickets: $10, includes a buffet (6 to 8 p.m.), live entertainment by "SANTA FE," an acoustic duo, 6 to 7:45 p.m., and The Willies rock n' roll band, 8:30 p.m. to midnight, and more. Saxonburg -- The Saxonburg-Sarver Ministerial will hold a service at 6:30 p.m. at Knoch High School football stadium on Knoch Road. A procession will include local fire and police departments, as well as the Knoch High Marching Band, Girl Scouts and more. Call 724-287-2378.

Beechview -- Beechview United Presbyterian Church, 1621 Broadway Ave., will hold a noon prayer service of remembrance.

Beechview -- Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 1516 Beechview Ave., will hold a prayer vigil from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a short service at 6:30 p.m. Call 412-561-1726.

Bethel Park -- South Hills Assembly, 2725 Bethel Church Road, will repeat the musical "God Save America" during a service at 6 p.m. Sunday. The production includes a salute to the armed forces, color guard, guest speaker and multimedia presentation along with a tribute to the heroes of 9/11. Police, fire and EMS personnel have been invited to attend. On Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. the church will hold a prayer and memorial service. Call 412-835-8900.

Bethel Park -- Christ United Methodist Church, 44 Highland Road, will hold a Sept. 11 Remembrance on Sunday, with Stations of Prayer (including spiritual prayer writing) from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. and a communitywide worship at 6 p.m.

On Wednesday, the church will hold a service at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. The church bells will toll from 7 to 7:15 p.m., the service will be from 7:15 to 7:45 p.m., and the Labyrinth--or prayer walk--will be available in the Christian Life Center from 7:45 to 9 p.m. for anyone wanting private meditation time. The Counseling Center at Christ Church will also offer post-9/11 classes at 7:30 p.m. to help those interested in processing anxiety and other emotions that arose from last September's national tragedy, and help them express the impact that the events had on their lives. Brentwood -- St. Peter's Episcopal Church, 4048 Brownsville Road, will hold a memorial service at 7 p.m.. Call 412-884-5225.

Brentwood -- Zion Lutheran Church, 4301 Brownsville Road, will conduct a service at 7 p.m. Call 412-881-5512.

Duquesne -- St. Joseph Church, 817 W. Grant Ave., will hold a service from 5 to 7 p.m., with private meditation from 5 to 6:30 p.m.. Call 412-466-2635 or 412-466-1304.

Finleyville -- The Finleyville Interfaith Council will sponsor a "A Service of Light: Remembering 9/11" at 8 p.m. Tuesday at James United Methodist Church, 303 Stone Church Road. During the service, a searchlight will be raised into sky--uniting the community in spirit with the search lights marking the Twin Towers. The Finley Youth and Finleyville Interfaith choirs will perform. Call 724-348-5504.

McMurray -- St. Benedict the Abbot Church, 120 Abington Drive, will host a 7 p.m. "Remembering 911" community prayer service with other churches from the Peters Township Ministerial Association. Township police and emergency workers also will participate in the service, which will feature patriotic music, readings and addresses by church officials. Call 724-941-9406.

Moon -- West Hills Christian Church, 965 Thorn Run Road, will hold a special lunch-hour prayer, music and devotion service, 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. Call 412-264-9392.

Mt. Lebanon -- St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Mayfair and Washington roads, will hold a remembrance service at 7:30 p.m.. Call 412-531-7153.

Pleasant Hills -- Pleasant Hills Community Presbyterian Church, 199 Old Clairton Road, will hold a service at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary. Call 412-655-2000.

Roscoe -- Roscoe Presbyterian Church, 300 Main St., will hold a service with holy communion at 7:30 p.m.

Upper St. Clair -- Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2040 Washington Road, plans a service in the sanctuary at 7:30 p.m. Call 412-835-6630.

Webster -- Mon Valley Community Church, Route 906, will hold a 7 p.m. candlelight remembrance service on the Donora-Webster Bridge, which borders Washington and Westmoreland counties. Fire boats from neighboring communities will escort a barge carrying clergy and police, fire, EMS and military representatives, plus the 40-piece Mon Valley Community Band. Blackwell Aviation will perform a commemorative four-plane flyover as the band plays the Star Spangled Banner. Community participants, who are to line-up on the bridge at 6:45 p.m., will each be given red, white or blue flowers to be simultaneously dropped into the river in memory of everyone who lost their lives in the terrorist attacks. The service will conclude with participants lighting candles across the bridge. Call 724-379-8980.

West Mifflin -- Homeville Christian Church, 4702 Eliza St., will hold a prayer service from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. today. On Wednesday, the church will be open for prayer and meditation from 8:30 to 10:30 a.m., and an hour-long Service will begin at 7 p.m. Call 412-461-3731.

Whitehall -- Baldwin Community United Methodist Church, Baptist Road and Doverdell Drive, will host an ecumenical community service at 8:30 a.m.. The service will be led by clergy and other representatives from Hamilton Presbyterian Church, Zion Lutheran Church, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God, and Baldwin Community Church. Bethel Park -- South Hills Interfaith Ministries, of South Park plans a "Hope and Remembrance" program at 7:30 p.m. in Bethel Park High School auditorium, 309 Church Road, Bethel Park. Participants will include local clergy, police officers, fire fighters, emergency medical technicians, community leaders, soloists, bell ringers, the Harrison Middle School 8th-grade choir and the Bethel Park High School Symphonic Band. Green Tree -- The Soka Gakkai International-USA Buddhist Center, 2121 Noblestown Plaza, Suite 200, will present "Remembering 9/11: A Buddhist Commemorative Meeting" from 7 to 8:30 p.m. This meeting will open with Buddhist prayer, followed by a presentation on Buddhism and the establishment of world peace through prayer and compassionate action. Penn Hills -- The senior class of Penn Hills Senior High School, Garland Drive, will form a living memorial to the victims of 9/11 during a 9:30 a.m. ceremony on the high school football field. The students' bodies will form two towers and the numbers "9-11" at approximately 9:50 a.m. A huge American flag will pass over the students to a single drumbeat. Members of the high school marching band, color guard, choir and Naval Junior ROTC will perform.

Shanksville -- The public memorial for the families of Flight 93 will be held at the crash site starting at 9:30 a.m. The program will feature the Johnstown Symphony Orchestra and 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing Band, a flyover by the 911th Airlift Wing, a moment of silence, the tolling of bells for each of the 40 passengers and crew who died, remarks by Sandy Dahl, wife of Flight 93 pilot Jason Dahl, the release of 40 white doves and the singing of "God Bless America."

The new Flight 93 Memorial Chapel, Boulevard of the Heroes, will be dedicated as a spiritual memorial to the heroes of United Airlines Flight 93 in a 1 p.m. ceremony. It will include tributes to various emergency personnel, commendations, musical concerts on the hour starting at 3 p.m., and a candlelight service at dusk. A Community Memorial Concert in honor of the heroes of Flight 93 will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Somerset Alliance Church sanctuary, with opening music at 6:20 p.m. The Johnstown Symphony Orchestra, Laurel Highlands Chorale and vocal group "Seasoned Grace" will perform, as will Derrill Bodley, of California, who wrote an original piano solo for his daughter, Flight 93 passenger Deora Bodley. The concert will be broadcast live on WJAC-TV and WPXI-TV, and National Public Radio. Only outside seating to view closed-circuit TV coverage will be available.

Places of worship
Ambridge -- Good Samaritan Roman Catholic Parish will mark the anniversary with an 6:30 p.m. Mass in St. Veronica Church, Glenwood and 7th streets. Following the Mass, participants will gather in the school cafeteria for prayer, discussion and activity which includes fashioning a parish cross.

Chippewa -- A service of remembrance will be held at 7 p.m. at Chippewa United Methodist Church, 2545 Darlington Road.

Crafton -- Special worship services, particularly for those who live in Crafton, Ingram, Rosslyn Farms and Thornburg, will be held at 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. at Crafton United Presbyterian Church, 80 Bradford Ave. Following the morning service, worshippers are invited to walk to the Crafton Fire Hall for a brief ceremony. There will be a bagpiper, ringing of the fire bells for lost firefighters, a wreath laying, a gun salute and taps will be played. After the evening service, those attending may proceed to the Ingram Borough Building for a similar observance. It will include a performance by the Montour High School Band.

Kennedy -- Reflection and evening prayer will begin at 7 p.m. at St. Malachy Roman Catholic Church, 343 Forest Grove Road.

Moon -- First Baptist Church of Coraopolis, 1443 Coraopolis Heights Road, will set aside 8:30 to 10 a.m. and 6:30 to 8 p.m. for reflection and prayer. Communion will be offered at both times.

Moon -- A special service will be held from 12:15 to 12:45 p.m. at West Hills Christian Church, 965 Thorn Run Road.

Oakdale -- Crossroads United Methodist Church will host a service at 7:30 p.m. Co-sponsoring the service will be West Ridge Christian Community and St. Philip's Episcopal Church. The service will include music and several short reflections on finding hope through Christ. One of the talks will be given by a woman whose father and brother are New York firefighters.

Findlay -- A "mini-rally" will be held from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Findlay Township Activity Center parking lot. Residents are invited to meet the Imperial firefighters. Fire-fighting equipment will be on display.

Kennedy -- A ceremony by Kenmawr American Legion, Post 464, will begin at noon at the War Memorial in Fairhaven Park. It will include a firemen's arch with ladders and the striking of bells.

South Fayette -- The township's four volunteer fire departments will conduct a remembrance ceremony at 9:45 a.m. at South Fayette Station 266 on Millers Run Road. Participating will be firefighters from South Fayette VFD, Sturgeon VFD, Fairview VFD and Oakridge VFD.

Stowe -- A remembrance ceremony will be held at 11:30 a.m. at the American Legion Sto-Rox Post 618, 526 Broadway.

Blood donations
Areawide -- Lazarus Department Stores will partner with local members of America's Blood Centers to conduct a major blood donation pledge card campaign through Sept. 15. Tuesday:

Dr. Charles McCollester, director of the Pennsylvania Center for the Study of Labor Relations at Indiana University of Pennsylvania, will speak on "Why 9-11? Many Reasons, No Excuses" at 12:30 p.m. in the Campus Assembly Room of Francis Warde Hall.

Wednesday:

At noon, the college will plant and dedicate an 8-foot peace pole, on which "May Peace Prevail on Earth" will be inscribed in eight languages, near the entrance of the college. The observance will include music, prayer and brief remarks by Carlow College President Dr. Grace Ann Geibel, RSM.

Thursday:

"In the Aftermath of 9-11: Responding to a Critical Incident" at 3:30 p.m. with Dr. Sheila Roth, associate professor and chair of the social work department at Carlow College, and Dan Swayze, director of pre-hospital care at UPMC, in the Campus Assembly Room of Francis Warde Hall.

Monroeville

Community College of Allegheny County, Boyce Campus -- The campus will hold a memorial service from 8:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. Jeff Glaid, a senior at Gateway High School, will play two selections on the bagpipes following a moment of silence.

On Tuesday, a faculty panel discussion on how terrorism has affected life in the U.S. will occur at 7 p.m. in the Science Center Amphitheatre, featuring professors Timothy Kelly, Thad Coreno and Brad Watson.

On Wednesday, the siren at Kennedy Hall and the bells of the Archabbey Basilica will sound at the times of the attacks and everyone on campus will be asked to pause and take one-minute for silent reflection at those times.

At noon that day, there will be a memorial prayer service, hosted by the Rt. Rev. Douglas R. Nowicki, O.S.B., Archabbot and Chancellor, in the Basilica. A Mass for Peace will be celebrated at 5 p.m. Wednesday in the Basilica.

Memorial service, 7 p.m., in the Sewall Center. State Rep. John Pippy and the university, its Campus Ministry Association and the West Hills Ministry will offer the service so that no one in the community has to be alone this day. Geneva College -- A remembrance service will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Old Main Auditorium at the campus in Beaver Falls. The service features Geneva College President John H. White will speak on the historical and contemporary significance of the school's motto Pro Christo et Patria (for Christ and Country).

Community College of Beaver County -- The school will hold a candle-lighting ceremony in the courtyard of the Monaca campus at noon. Community members are invited to attend and are encouraged to wear red, white and blue.

Washington County

California University of Pennsylvania -- At 8:30 a.m., President Angelo Armenti will welcome the guests in Hamer Gymnasium, and the university choir will perform. The program will feature Dr. Joseph Heim, an expert in international relations, who will offer a view on what has happened in the Middle East and the future in the war on terrorism.

Downtown -- The Pittsburgh Symphony, Heinz Hall, 600 Penn Ave. "A Concert for Heroes: Mahler's 'Resurrection' Symphony," 7:30 p.m., benefit performance featuring the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh, soprano Esther Heideman and mezzo-soprano Stacey Rishoi. Also, the exhibition "Strange Messenger: The Art of Patti Smith," which opens Sept. 27 and continues through Jan. 5, includes a series of large-scale drawings inspired by the events of Sept. 11. Point Breeze -- Frick Art & Historical Center, 7227 Reynolds St. Visitors can write comments in a binder that was part of an installation, "Art is a Necessity," created in the fall in response to Sept. 11, which also included quotes from public arts figures and articles about the tragic event. More than 350 visitor comments were recorded through May. The book is returning to the Jacobean Room in The Frick Art Museum, which will be open for reading and contemplation throughout September.
