Authorities are investigating the death of a Windber Borough man who was struck early this morning by an eastbound train in Westmoreland County.

A county dispatcher said the fatal collision was reported at 12:50 a.m. near the intersection of Routes 56 and 711 in Seward. Westmoreland County coroner Kenneth Bacha has identified the man as Christopher Reed, 22, of Somerset County.

He was struck by a Norfolk Southern train. Train officials used the emergency brake after they saw him on the tracks and called the dispatch center for help.

An ambulance was sent but Mr. Reed was pronounced dead at the scene around 2:20 a.m.

Official cause of death and toxicology results are pending, and an autopsy is scheduled for Monday. Seward police could not be reached for details.
