The North Huntingdon commissioners on Wednesday night voted to fire long-time township police Officer William Sombo.

Commissioners Brian West, Thomas Krause, Zach Haigis and Rich Gray voted for the firing; commissioners Tony Martino and Donald Austin voted against it; and Commissioner Dave Herold abstained.

“Officer Sombo has dedicated his life for 30 years to this township,” Mr. Martino said. He said the commissioners could have allowed Mr. Sombo to retire in November as he wished.

Mr. Martino and Mr. Austin said they saw no reason to terminate Mr. Sombo’s employment.

Commissioners would not elaborate on the reason for the firing.

Commissioner Rich Gray called the decision to fire "unfortunate and painful," but said he believes the board of commissioners did the right thing.

Officer Sombo could not be reached for comment.
