An 8-year-old boy was seriously hurt when he and a babysitter were hit by an SUV while crossing a road late Saturday night in Lower Burrell, police said.
The boy, who lives in Lower Burrell but was not identified by police, was flown by medical helicopter to UPMC Children’s Hospital in Pittsburgh after the collision, which happened just before 11 p.m. at Leechburg Road and Rita Avenue.
Lower Burrell police Sgt. Zach Beam said an eastbound 2007 Ford Explorer driven by Joel Santoro, 43, of Lower Burrell, hit the boy and 38-year-old Nicole Vickers, also of Lower Burrell, as they were crossing Leechburg Road.
Mr. Santoro, who stopped to render aid, was not intoxicated and was not charged in the collision, Sgt. Bream said.
Ms. Vickers was wearing a black leather jacket and the boy was wearing a brown hooded sweatshirt, making them difficult to see on the dark road in the rain, Sgt. Bream added.
Ms. Vickers was treated for her injuries at a local hospital and released.
Attempts to obtain an update on the boy’s condition through the Lower Burrell police and UPMC Children’s Hospital were unsuccessful Sunday evening.
