Speed is believed to have been a factor in a motorcycle accident Monday in West Newton that killed a man and injured his passenger, the Westmoreland County coroner's office said today.

Scott Sparrow, 31, of Hazelwood, was riding at the intersection of Route 136 and Quarry Way shortly after 5:30 p.m. when, for reasons that aren't clear, he didn't make a right turn in the road, according to a press release from the county coroner's office.

He went across the center line then off the road into a wooded area, where he and his passenger were thrown from the motorcycle.

Mr. Sparrow, who was wearing a helmet, was pronounced dead at the scene at 7 p.m. of neck injuries suffered in the accident, the coroner's office said.

His passenger, whose name was not released, was flown by medical helicopter to a Pittsburgh hospital.

The coroner's office also is awaiting results of toxicology tests.
