Admission to Fort Ligonier and five other historic sites and museums in Westmoreland County will be free on Sunday.

The other institutions participating in the Community Day event include the Compass Inn Museum, a restored stagecoach stop in Laughlintown; the Lincoln Highway Experience museum in Latrobe; Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art and Ligonier Valley Railroad Museum, both in Ligonier; and the Antiochian Heritage Museum, part of the Antiochian Village Conference Center on Route 711, north of Ligonier. Hours of admission vary at each site.

Fort Ligonier's special programs on Sunday will include demonstrations of bread baking in field ovens and blacksmithing, gallery talks by uniformed British officers and children's activities.

Sunday's free admission marks the start of several special events planned for the summer and fall at Fort Ligonier, executive director Annie Urban said.

This year marks the 250th anniversary of the Battle of Bushy Run. That victory by British forces in August 1763 raised the siege of Fort Pitt during Pontiac's Rebellion. An unsuccessful attack by Native Americans on Fort Ligonier in June preceded Bushy Run, and that earlier event will be marked with a battle re-enactment June 22-23.

The Westmoreland Symphony will return to Fort Ligonier for the second year and perform a free outdoor concert June 29. Audience members will have a chance to view the fort and museum before the performance.

Fort Ligonier also is expanding its day camp from one to two weeks for children in second through fifth grades.

This year's Fort Ligonier Days, a communitywide celebration, will be held Oct. 11-13. The three-day event marks the anniversary of an unsuccessful attack on Fort Ligonier during the French and Indian War.

An 18th century British fort and historic site, Fort Ligonier is at the intersection of Routes 711 and 30. It is open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 4:30 p.m. Sunday from now until Nov. 10.
