A North Huntingdon couple and their son were found dead in their home Thursday night in what police said was a double murder-suicide, but the motive and details remain unclear.
Authorities last night found the bodies of Franklin Hutchison, 68, his wife Hazel, 67, and their son, William Hutchison, 46, in their house on Guffey Road after the younger Hutchinson's employer, a car dealership, called police to say he hadn't shown up for work for several days.
Police have no motive.
"I'm not going to say it's a mystery, but sometimes you just don't know," said Det. Sgt. Jeff Bouldin of the North Huntingdon department. "We may never know."
His department and Westmoreland County detectives are examining forensic evidence and awaiting autopsy results, but so far nothing points to an explanation.
Neighbors on busy Guffey Road, where the small houses are tightly packed together, heard no shots, nor had they heard arguing or any commotion before the shootings.
Police had been to the ramschackle house before, but only to address complaints about Franklin Hutchison's dogs. They had not been there for any domestic disturbances, and police interviews of neighbors shed no light on the situation in the home.
One neighbor, who was relatively knew to the neighborhood, said this morning that he'd only seen Franklin a few times and never saw Hazel or William.
The family, which had lived in the house since 1975, kept to themselves.
"Nobody really knows them," said Sgt. Bouldin.
Westmoreland County detectives are expected to provide more details later today. Allegheny County forensic pathologist Cyril H. Wecht Jr. is conducting the autopsies on the three.
Correction, April 20, 2013: An earlier version indicated the son had shot the parents. Authorities have not yet released information on who did the shooting.mobilehome - breaking - neigh_east - neigh_westmoreland
