A Westmoreland County man was being held in jail tonight on charges that he fired 17 shots while state troopers surrounded his home.

Daniel Ryan, 44, of Hempfield, faces charges of aggravated assault, terroristic threats and recklessly endangering another person.

State police from the Greensburg barracks said they were called to his home on Antler Lane about 10:30 p.m. Thursday after his wife told police he had threatened to kill her.

Troopers wrote in a criminal complaint that they asked Mr. Ryan to turn on the lights and leave the home. They said Mr. Ryan refused and then began firing shots outside of the building, toward state troopers who had surrounded his home. They said he continued to fire, setting out 17 shots by roughly 1 a.m. neigh_westmoreland
