A McKees Rocks man pleaded guilty Thursday morning to a count of animal cruelty for shooting a dog in March, according to the District Attorney's office.

A mixed-breed dog, Zeus, was shot twice in the back left leg in McKees Rocks and required extensive medical treatment to repair broken bones. "One bullet remains in the leg but the dog is expected to make a complete recovery," district attorney spokesman Mike Manko said in a press release.

Judge Edward Borkowski sentenced Philip Montgomery, 48, to 11 1/2 to 23 months in jail. The commonwealth is also expected to ask for restitution to cover veterinary bills, expected to be more than $4,000, Mr. Manko said.

It is unclear why Mr. Montgomery shot the dog.
