Moon police said Tuesday that they are investigating a crash in which the Coraopolis police chief ran a red light in an unmarked police car and struck another vehicle in the intersection.

Chief Alan DeRusso was driving south on University Boulevard around 8:15 a.m. Aug. 7, when he ran a red light at Thorn Run Road, witnesses told police, Moon police chief Leo McCarthy said in a press release.

Both drivers were seriously injured and their cars severely damaged. Neither person's injuries are life-threatening. A third vehicle was impacted, but no one was injured.

Moon's special investigations unit is investigating and working to reconstruct the crash. A traffic crash reconstructionist from Allegheny County police was assigned to the case to act as a consultant. The investigation will be presented to the Allegheny County district attorney's office for review.

Coraopolis officials have fully cooperated, Chief McCarthy said.
