South Fayette

Allegheny County Council issued a proclamation Feb. 18 lauding South Fayette for its part in the legal challenge of Act 13, the state’s law on Marcellus Shale natural gas drilling.

County council thanked the township and Commissioner Deron Gabriel, former board president, “for their outstanding efforts to protect the citizens and interests of local communities.”

South Fayette was the only municipality in Allegheny County to join the lawsuit against the 2012 shale law.

County council had expressed support for the lawsuit and for municipalities keeping local zoning control, which Act 13 had attempted to replace with statewide zoning rules for drilling, the proclamation said.

In December, the state Supreme Court ruled portions of Act 13 as unconstitutional, restoring local zoning authority.

■ Commissioners are considering an ordinance on electronic and LED signs and billboards.

Manager Ryan Eggleston said township staff recommends prohibiting new electronic signs.

Board members voted 5-0 on Feb. 19 to send the draft regulations to the planning commission for review.
