A Westmoreland County man died and a woman was injured when an SUV and a tractor-trailer collided Monday morning on the outbound Parkway West near Montour Run Road in Moon.

The injured woman was driving a GMC Terrain in the right lane when she lost control shortly before 9:45 a.m., entered the berm, tried to regain control and instead collided with a tractor-trailer that was in the middle lane, Pennsylvania State Police Trooper Robin Mungo said.

The tractor-trailer driver hit a barrier, lost control and then hit a guide rail and flipped, winding up on a slope to the right of the highway.

The driver, John Tepke, 48, of Jeannette, was pronounced dead at the scene of the crash, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.

The SUV driver was taken to a local hospital in an unknown condition, Trooper Mungo said.

Police had little immediate information about why the SUV driver initially hit the berm of the road.

"What she was doing -- that is to be seen," Trooper Mungo said.

State police closed the outbound lanes of the Parkway West for several hours, forcing drivers, including those heading to Pittsburgh International Airport, to use alternate routes.
