A Clairton man was arraigned this morning on kidnapping charges after police said he abducted an 9-month-old boy Thursday, prompting a region-wide Amber Alert.
Alexander S. Frazier, 27, is in the Beaver County Jail in lieu of $20,000 bail, on charges of kidnapping and interfering with the custody of a child. An attorney was not listed in online court records.
The infant, Carter Speelman, was taken shortly before 8 p.m. from his grandmothers's Morado Dwellings home, said Beaver Falls police Chief Charles R. Jones Jr.
Mr. Frazier claims to be the baby's father, the chief said, but he isn't listed on child's birth certificate, and the mother identified someone else.
Chief Jones would not say how far Mr. Frazier traveled with the child, but said he stayed "locally." He would not discuss a possible motive, saying the case is under investigation.
Beaver Falls police were in contact with Mr. Frazier periodically during the incident, and an officer encouraged him to surrender and return the child unharmed, police said. The alert was canceled late Thursday night.
