A man was fatally shot early this morning in Coraopolis in what authorities said appears to be a robbery and home invasion.

The Allegheny County medical examiner's office identified the man as Thomas Cassano, 39.

Neighbors reported hearing shots shortly before 3 a.m. in the 800 block of Fifth Avenue, Allegheny County police Lt. Andrew Schurman said.

Police found Mr. Cassano's body in the kitchen. He was shot multiple times, the lieutenant said.

Two children also were home at the time and are now safe with family. Police aren't sure whether Mr. Cassano is their biological father.

Police said they are looking for as many as four suspects and are following some leads.

Borough and county police are investigating.

Neighbor and friend Thomas Jones, 50, said Mr. Cassano's two young daughters are now with their grandmother.

He said he heard gunshots and saw two men and one woman run away. He went into his friend's home, where he found him lying on the kitchen floor.

"He was a loving father," Mr. Jones said. "His kids was his priority in life."

The white house sits away from Fifth Avenue in a cluster of buildings, including a funeral home and a Head Start.

A woman who said she was a friend said she and those with her were distraught and didn't want to talk with media.
