CHARTIERS VALLEY SCHOOLS

Discussions about facilities plan

Chartiers Valley superintendent Brian White wants to make sure as many district residents as possible have a say in the development of a long-term facilities plan.

“We want to develop a long-term strategy we can afford,” he told Scott commissioners Oct. 22, inviting officials and residents from Bridgeville, Collier, Heidelberg and Scott to participate Wednesday in the facilities forum in the high school on Thoms Run Road in Collier.

Eight presentations, each expected to last about two hours, will start at 20-minute intervals from 5 to 7:20 p.m. The presentations will discuss topics such as the current status of the district, projected enrollment, evaluation of the educational program, building options and cost analyses.

Though the district underwent an expansion in 2007, it spends about $500,000 a year on capital projects and nearly $1 million annually on utilities. Consequently, the district is looking into how to make the schools more efficient.

Architectural Innovations, LLC has reviewed the district’s buildings and made recommendations, some of which involve more than just energy improvements. School leaders are seeking opinions from residents about what should be done.

Mr. White said officials want to come up with a five-15-year plan with the help of community input and contracted engineers and architects.
