Lou Cerro, head coach of the Montour High School football team, also has been named full-time athletic director.

The district recently promoted Mr. Cerro and gave him a pay raise to serve in both positions, school board President Ron Smith said Thursday night.

According to Mr. Smith, Mr. Cerro's athletic director salary is $65,000, with no contract. His coaching pay is about $10,620 under a negotiated contract. Hiring a separate athletic director would have cost an estimated $70,000 to $100,000, Mr. Smith said.

"He's a very qualified person," Mr. Smith said. "He knows everything about the system, so he can step in without missing a beat."

He replaces Mitch Galiyas, who was athletic director for 18 years before retiring in June.

Mr. Smith said the district saved money by having Mr. Cerro do both jobs: "We didn't hire an athletic director. We just promoted [Mr. Cerro] and gave him a raise."

Montour hired Mr. Cerro in 2005 as football coach and assistant director of athletic facilities.
