The Carlynton school board and district teachers have reached an agreement on a new five-year teacher contract that runs through 2018. The nine school board members unanimously voted June 22 to approve the contract. The old contract had expired on June 30.
School Superintendent Gary Peiffer said, "I believe the contract is a good agreement for the [Carlynton Federation of Teachers] and the community."
The district has about 1,400 students in Carnegie, Rosslyn Farms and Crafton.
School board president David Roussos said, "both sides are pretty pleased with it."
The new contract includes a $1,350 per year raise for teachers.
"Our teachers were understanding about what we are going through," Mr. Roussos said. "This is the lowest annual increase I have ever seen."
Teachers agreed to pay a larger share of their health care premiums, said Mr. Roussos, who provided the following summary:
In the new contract, teacher contribution toward health care will escalate by $300 a year for family coverage. In the last year of the previous contract teachers with family coverage paid about $1,100. They will pay $1,400 in the first year of the new contract, $1,700 in the second, $2,000 in the third, $2,300 in the fourth and $2,600 in the fifth and final year.
"It is about $2,600 in total, which is $1,500 more than they previously paid, he said.
"This is a compromise. Neither side got everything they wanted," Mr. Roussos said. "It's five years and I feel good about it. It provides stability" for the district.
In the small, close-knit communities of Carlynton, everyone knows everyone else and there is mutual respect, Mr. Roussos said. "The is the third contract negotiation I have been involved in and it has always been positive."
Carrie Badger, president of the Carlynton Federation of Teachers, could not be reached for comment.
