A committee of administrators and teachers presented a proposed student code of conduct to the board March 14.

Laura Begg, social studies teacher and detention monitor, said the proposed code would focus on redirecting the punitive guidelines in the current discipline policy and place a greater emphasis on behavior and expectations.

Chemistry teacher Carrie Badger said the handbook also would call for "safe haven" reporting. She said under the present policy guidelines, a student found with pepper spray in a book bag was punished, but in a safe haven situation, the student would be accountable for turning the spray into the principal and explaining the circumstances, which would be factored in determining the disclipline.

The committee will return to the board with a review of similarities and differences with the current policies.

• The board retained BDA Engineering to provide engineering services for Carnegie Elementary School heating, ventilating and air conditioning and electrical upgrades for $128,600. The board retained Loftus Engineers, LLC to provide those same engineering services for Crafton Elementary School for $136,411.

• The school board accepted letters of intent to retire, effective June 30, from Carnegie Elementary teacher Jeanine Butts, Crafton Elementary teachers Nina Kovanis and Clare Rex; elementary school nurse Rosemary Ulintz and elementary/junior high gifted facilitator Mary Beth Veri.
