Kennedy has erected a new playground fire truck in Fairhaven Park to honor the 75th anniversary of its volunteer fire company.

Parks and recreation Commissioner Anita Kulik said the board solicited donations from local businesses to pay for the children's play apparatus, adding Ohio Valley General Hospital was among the first to contribute.

"We've already purchased and installed Freddie the Fire Truck, but we want to add to it and put up a plaque celebrating the firemen," she said.

"They're amazing, dedicated men, and I don't know what we'd do without them."

The volunteer fire company was founded in the 1930s by Cuthbert Elliot, who along with his brother and neighbors, purchased a 1919 Cadillac and converted it into the first fire truck.

The company now consists of more than 40 engineers, firefighters and junior firefighters.

Chris Gutt, fire chief at Kennedy Township's Independent Volunteer Fire Company, said his company appreciates knowing it can count on the support of the town, especially in the current economic climate.

"I'm really amazed by the people who have donated," Mr. Gutt said. "All little kids love fire trucks because everyone wants to be a fireman when they grow up."

A highlight of the 75th anniversary year will be the annual parade on Aug. 11. The event, which will begin at 7 p.m., will be larger than usual.

The parade will begin at the police station, 340 Forest Grove Road, and follow Forest Grove to Fairhaven Road and into Fairhaven Park. The evening will culminate with a fireworks show starting at 9:30 p.m.
