A woman was killed and her son suffered burns in a house fire early this morning in Cecil, Washington County.

Cecil police Detective Mark Marcucci identified the victim as 64-year-old Margaret Pelc. Her son, Geoffrey, 34, was burned on the hands and back and was being treated at UPMC Mercy in Pittsburgh.

The fire was reported at 3:16 a.m. in the family home on Laurel Hill Road near McDonald. Firefighters initially were hampered in recovering the body because the fire rekindled about 5:45 a.m. and part of the house was in danger of collapsing.

Detective Marcucci said Geoffrey Pelc told some people at the scene that he couldn't sleep so he got up to do laundry. Detective Marcucci said Pennsylvania State Police fire marshals were searching the area near the laundry room for signs of ignition. He said the fire wasn't suspicious in nature.
