Man changing tire on I-79 struck by car, killed

A man changing his vehicle's tire alongside Interstate 79 was struck by a car and killed this evening, state police said.

John J. Eisminger, 42, of Waynesburg died around 7:30 p.m. at the Washington Hospital emergency room after being hit by a Ford Focus on I-79 northbound, near mile marker 31 in Amwell, according to a news release from the Washington County coroner.

Timothy J. Rodriguez, 43, of Bentleyville was driving the car northbound around 5:40 p.m. when it traveled from the left lane to the right shoulder for unknown reasons, state police said. After hitting Mr. Eisminger, the car hit an embankment and stopped, state police said.

Mr. Eisminger died of blunt force trauma, and the manner of death is pending an investigation, the coroner said.

Mr. Rodriguez was life-flighted to to Allegheny General Hospital for a possible head injury, state police said.
