A Washington County man accused of killing his wife while she slept at their Carroll home last month will stand trial on homicide charges.

Pennsylvania State Police said Ronald Powell, 70, awoke about 3 a.m. March 30, grabbed a shotgun from underneath his bed, and using a handheld lighting device to illuminate the room, shot his wife, Leslie Powell, 62, in the head.

Mr. Powell was ordered held for court by Washington County Judge Valarie Costanzo at his preliminary hearing this morning.

The house where Ms. Powell was killed, in the 1500 block of Walters Street, was the same place the couple had lived for more than 30 years and where they wed on their front porch, neighbors said.

Mr. Powell remains in the Washington County Correctional Facility.
