An argument about the rules of the sport turned physical on a Fayette County golf course Sunday, resulting in hospital visits for two golfers and a state police investigation.

State police did not release the names of the golfers, ages 42 and 63, and the investigating officer did not immediately return a message today.

The two became "embroiled in a heated debate over the rules of golf, specifically regarding water" on the fifth hole of the Springdale Golf Course in South Union around 1 p.m. Sunday, police in a news release.

The argument "involving rules, or lack of understanding of said rules" continued on the seventh fairway, then "escalated quickly" and turned physical, police said. Both golfers were injured and treated at Uniontown Hospital.

It was not clear if anyone was charged in the incident, but state police were investigating whether assault charges are warranted.
