A fire that killed a man Wednesday night in an apartment in Pleasant Hills appears to have started in a bedroom, according to Allegheny County officials.

The county medical examiner’s office identified him as William Ingold, 56. He was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy was scheduled today.

County Chief of Emergency Services Alvin Henderson said it looked like the fire started in a bedroom of a third-floor apartment. Local police arrived on the scene and tried to enter but could not due to the conditions, he said.

Firefighters extinguished the fire before it spread to other apartments.

At 11 p.m., two and a half hours after the blaze was reported, residents of the Neopolitan Suites remained outside with friends and family.

Sharon Savko, 51, has lived in the building for two years and came to check on her friends when she heard about the fire.

"Nice guy, didn't smoke," she said of the victim. "I just saw him the other day."

"Real easy going, talked real slow," said Joe Verno, 48, another neighbor. "I just got to know him."
