A student whose rape in 2012 led to the incarceration of a school musical director sued the Charleroi Area School District and Bethlehem-Center School District on Tuesday, alleging that their inaction violated her rights.
The student, who was then 15 and is not named in the complaint, participated in the school musical “Back to the ’80s” in 2012, according to the lawsuit.
Charleroi contracted with Bethlehem-Center for the services of director Jeffrey A. Hahn Jr., now 25, of Allison Park, who romanced and then raped the student, according to the complaint.
Hahn is serving a four- to eight-year prison sentence for sexual assault and other crimes.
Charleroi teacher Jennifer Marie Joyce, who was in charge of the musical, learned of the rape, according to the complaint, but did not investigate or report it. Ms. Joyce, 29, of Bellevue, later received accelerated rehabilitative disposition for failing to report child abuse.
The student faced “harassing confrontations and comments by fellow students,” wrote her attorney, Peter D. Friday, but received little support from teachers or administrators, and transferred to a cyber charter school.
The two school districts violated the student’s Title IX rights to be free of sexual harassment, sexual assault and a sexually hostile educational environment, the complaint contended, seeking monetary damages.
Charleroi and Bethlehem-Center school officials could not be reached for comment.
