The Brentwood school board voted unanimously to promote Elroy Elementary principal Amy Burch to the position of superintendent effective July 1.

Ms. Burch, a resident of Brentwood, will replace Ronald Dufalla, who is retiring June 30, after eight years as Brentwood superintendent.

The board awarded Ms. Burch a five-year contract with a starting salary of $116,000 at its Tuesday meeting. She was chosen after the board conducted a superintendent search under the direction of the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.

Ms. Burch has been with the district since July 2008, when she took the job of Elroy principal. She is currently finishing her dissertation for a doctorate at Indiana University of Pennsylvania.

Mr. Dufalla said he wrote Ms. Burch a letter of recommendation when she applied for the superintendency.

"I know she will be a good superintendent," Mr. Dufalla said. "She has been with the district long enough to understand the finances and she has a good grasp of what the community expects."
