A PennDOT contractor will resume painting of the Liberty Tunnels, causing overnight lane closures starting Monday.

One lane will be closed in the inbound tunnel starting at 8 p.m. daily through June 1, with the restriction lifted by 6 a.m. each day.

The work was scheduled for completion last year but the project was suspended because the paint was not adhering properly to the tunnel walls.

There will be full overnight closures of the tunnels starting around midsummer, PennDOT spokesman Steve Cowan said. The schedule has not been finalized.
