A Washington County man who was convicted in 2008 of murdering a 78-year-old Upper St. Clair widow took the first steps today toward challenging his death sentence in U.S. District Court.

Patrick Jason Stollar, 35, was sentenced to die for the 2003 slaying of Jean Heck. He was hired to do yard work for her but instead beat and strangled her, and robbed her house.

Assistant federal public defenders filed a motion to represent him in a federal habeas corpus action. They noted that the state Supreme Court in January affirmed the death sentence judgment, and the U.S. Supreme Court on April 7 declined to review that decision.
