Here are some spring-cleaning tips, courtesy of Linda King, author of "The Joy of Getting It Done."

Pick a small goal

Ms. King recommends focusing on a specific, manageable area. "Don't say, 'I'm going to clean out the whole bedroom.' Say 'I am going to clean out the closet, then I am going to clean under my bed.' Completely clear that area bare and put that stuff in boxes in order to break it down."

Set a timer

It feels more manageable to work in chunks. "It's easier to say, 'I'm going to work at this for 20 minutes,' than to just say, 'I'm going to do the whole thing,' " she said.

Make a plan

Ms. King said it is important to schedule time for organizing on your calendar. "One of the problems with getting your space under control is there is usually no deadline. … So try to give yourself a deadline," she said.

Get support

Ms. King suggests asking a friend to help you; then you can help that friend. "That's a lot more fun and then … you'll follow through because you've made a date," she said.
