A man found hanging in his cell last week at the Fayette County Prison has died, officials said today.

Derek Andrew Thomas, 25, of Oliver, Fayette County, was pronounced dead Thursday at UPMC Presbyterian, according to the Allegheny County medical examiner's office.

Uniontown city police Capt. David Rutter said a prison guard making the rounds found Mr. Thomas hanging from a piece of bedsheet Dec. 22.

The captain said prison officials told him Mr. Thomas had a pulse but wasn't breathing on his own when he left the prison to be transported to the hospital. He wasn't sure how long Mr. Thomas had been hanging before he was discovered.

Online court records show Mr. Thomas was arrested and jailed Dec. 21 on charges of burglary, theft and receiving stolen property.

Uniontown city police are investigating the death, which Capt. Rutter said doesn't appear to involve foul play. Prison officials could not be reached.
