People have been dressing in costumes at this time of year since at least the Middle Ages, but in the past half-century, treat-or-treating has become more popular and widespread across the United States.

In Pittsburgh and its suburbs, many little ghosts and goblins will be going door-to-door for some tasty treats next week. Some communities also will hold parades and other assorted Halloween activities.

Youngsters in the City of Pittsburgh will trick or treat from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. next Thursday. Here is a roundup of suburban community trick-or-treating hours and a sampling of other spooky events:

North suburbs, with parts of Butler County;

South suburbs, including some Washington County communities;

East suburbs,, including parts of Westmoreland County;

West suburbs, including much of Beaver County.
