Three seniors at Canon-McMillan High School and one from Serra Catholic High School have won $5,000 scholarships from the Horatio Alger Foundation.

They are Sydney D. Cargill, Jamie L. Celento and Mary E. Iskey from the Canon-McMillan and Wei Mon Lu from Serra in Mc-Keesport

Students are chosen for their commitment to education, community service and strength of character.

The Alger scholarship programs are funded by its members and friends of the organization and foundations.

Since 1987, it has given nearly $5 million in scholarships to high school seniors in Pennsylvania.

• Summer Bennett, 11, a student at McMurray Elementary School in the Peters Township School District has been chosen as a state finalists in the National American Miss Pageant to be held Aug. 10-11 at the Hilton Hotel in Harrisburg. The pageants are held for girls 4 to 18 and have five age divisions. Summer, daughter of Leita Rocco of McMurray and Tom Bennett of Monongahela, will participate in the preteen division. Summer is a Girl Scout and a dancer.
