Locals can help storm victims
Terrace Church of the Nazarene, 1815 Worton Blvd., West Mifflin, will be a drop-off site Sunday through Dec. 9 for donations to help those in New York who remain affected by Superstorm Sandy.
Pastor Peter S. Roy said the church is collecting baby items; feminine products; large trash bags and tall kitchen garbage bags; new sleeping bags and blankets; new or slightly used coats in all sizes; gloves and scarves.
Cash donations to help pay for delivery are welcome.

• Volunteers are accepting donations for storm victims from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Sunday at the Shur-Save parking lot on Route 22 in Murrysville.
The donations will be delivered Sunday directly to sites on the East Coast. Items should be placed in cardboard boxes with contents labeled on the outside. Items needed include rubber boots, work gloves, batteries, blankets, flashlights, nonperishable food, cleaning supplies, toiletries and pet food.
The Franklin Regional School District Retirees and the Tri-state Antique Truck Club are organizing the effort.

District hires two new administrators
Effective Dec. 3, two new faces will be in district administration: business manager Mark R. Cherpak and director of human resources Christopher Constantine.
The board hired the two Nov. 7, with a vote of 8-1 to hire Mr. Cherpak and 7-2 to hire Mr. Constantine.
Mr. Cherpak, director of operational services and board secretary in the Steel Valley School District, will receive an annual salary of $98,000. He will replace business manager William McNamee, who will retire Dec. 21.
Mr. Constantine, who will move here from Connecticut, has held numerous human resources positions. He will be paid $90,000 a year. His position is newly created by the district.
"We had people in HR capacity, but we never had a true department within the school district and a director," board President John Schmotzer said.
"Several in central administration handled different aspects of HR, but now we feel with the number of employees - almost 700 - that an HR department will be a true asset because it will free people up in other departments to can focus on what is truly important, which is education," he said.
The human resources duties had been divided among others, he said, such as assistant superintendent Denise Sedlacek handling grievances and personnel issues "when she should be focusing on educational matters."
The board said the two new hires will result in a savings of $420,000 over administrative spending in the prior school year.
Over the past six months, the district's assistant to the superintendent for finance and operations and its assistant superintendent of secondary education left the district for other positions. Those roles will not be filled.
The district also eliminated the positions of director of pupil services, technology department technician and assistant transportation manager.
"The board has not designated the [$420,000] savings for any purpose, but it will probably remain in the operating fund to help future budgets," Mr. Schmotzer said.
• From 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday, members of Baldwin High School's Literary Guild book club will deliver 1,200 books they collected to boost the fiction section of the library at Pittsburgh Carmalt Elementary School, 1550 Breining St., Brookline.
Guild members also will clean, organize, catalog and shelve books.

Historical society to hold two events
The Elizabeth Township Historical Society will host an indoor flea market and author's talk this weekend.
The flea market will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at Boston Presbyterian Church, 5824 Smithfield St.
Author Carl Lander will lead a "Conversation and Journey into History" by discussing his book, "Builders of our Country 1706-1806," at 2 p.m. Sunday at the society's museum and library in the Coates House, 5811 Smithfield St.
Mr. Lander is a retired printer and teacher from West Newton who has lectured on local history for 35 years. He is a member of historical society's board of directors.
Free homebuyers workshop set for Saturday

High schoolers to sing with Italian artist
Some 170 high school choral students from North Allegheny Senior high and Upper St. Clair high will perform with international Italian soprano Giorgia Fumanti next weekend. Performances are 8 p.m. Nov. 23 at USC and 7 p.m. Nov. 25 at North Allegheny.
Ms. Fumanti is an international star with six albums, whose operatic/pop musical style has been compared to that of Sarah Brightman and Barbra Streisand. She has been featured on three PBS specials.
Vito DiSalvo of Pittsburgh, Ms. Fumanti's musical director, will direct the local performances, which include an orchestra made up of Pittsburgh musicians.

Tutors needed for adult education program
Community Action Southwest is looking for volunteers in Washington and Greene counties to tutor students in its Adult Education Program.
The program is to help local residents age 17 or older obtain a GED and increase learning skills so they may enroll in a trade school or college or get a job.
Volunteers are needed to assist Pennsylvania-certified teachers with classes in Burgettstown, Carmichaels, Donora, Washington and Waynesburg. Classes are held on various days and times.
Volunteers also are needed to tutor students in individual sessions at local libraries.
Training will be provided. Volunteers will be asked to tutor in subjects in which they are comfortable, including reading, writing, spelling and math.
Volunteers must either have a bachelor's degree or be pursuing a four-year degree at a college or university.
