A masked man dressed in dark clothing broke into several cars early Sunday morning in South Union, Fayette County, state police said.
TV reports described the man as a ninja. State police hesitated to use that description.
Shortly after midnight Sunday, people called police to report a man breaking into a car at 519 Braddock Ave.
Santino Guzzo, who lives in the area, started patrolling the street with his car before police arrived, saw the masked man hiding in a yard and confronted him.
The masked man then produced a sword and tried to stab Mr. Guzzo while Mr. Guzzo was still in his car.
The stabbing was unsuccessful, so the masked man broke the rear window and ran away. Mr. Guzzo chased the man but quickly gave up.
State police from the Uniontown barracks responded and found 11 other vehicles had been broken into in the area.
No arrests have been made.
Police asked anyone with information about the incident to contact Trooper Robert C. Reitler at 724-439-7111.
