The Brentwood Park Initiative may soon finalize plans for an ambitious overhaul -- more than $6 million worth -- of the town's park.
A master plan has been presented to the group by J.T. Sauer & Associates, a landscape architect and engineering firm in McKees Rocks.
Initiative members met Tuesday for a walk through the park to visualize some of those proposals, which include replacing the basketball and tennis courts with two youth baseball fields, extending the track around the football field, relocating the basketball courts closer to the high school, adding a deck hockey rink, expanding the pool to include spray features, new turf and building a grandstand for the football stadium.
Ben Simpson, of J.T. Sauer, was on hand to answer questions. He called the plan a "directional guide." No part is final, he said.
Initiative member Frank Cappetta said a final plan will be presented to council in November. The proposed plan was drawn based on input by members of the community and school coaches.
The price tag for the project is estimated by J.T. Sauer & Associates at $6.1 million, although choice of construction materials may cause that to rise.
So far, $200,000 has been raised through fundraisers, an amount borough manager George Zboyovsky said was "impressive" since no concrete plans have been made.
"People have underestimated this group," he said.
The Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and National Resources has approved the proposed layout of the park. Once designs are finalized, they will be sent to council and Mr. Zboyovsky believes council will quickly accept.
The Brentwood Park Initiative was conceived on July 4, 2008 to give the stadium a facelift but after realizing changing one field would impact another, plans for a complete overhaul were developed.
"We had to re-configure the park to at least maintain the fields we had," Dr. Cappetta said.
Mr. Simpson added that any redesign of the park was a "challenge" because all the facilities are located in the same area.
