Motorists are reminded that the inbound Liberty Tunnel is closed for painting through Aug. 22.

The inbound side shut down at 8 p.m. Tuesday.

The posted detour takes traffic to the already congested Parkway West. An inbound tunnel closure last year caused worse-than-usual jams on the parkway. The detour follows northbound Route 51 to the parkway interchange, using the Banksville Road off-ramp to turn back to the inbound parkway and Fort Pitt Tunnels.

Overnight closures of the outbound tunnel might be needed during the same time frame. The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation will announce those closures later.

The painting is part of the $18.8 million fourth phase of Liberty Tunnels rehabilitation.

Earlier this summer, the contractor closed the outbound tunnel to apply the bright white paint.
