HARRISBURG — One of Pennsylvania’s largest state government agencies may soon be getting a name change.
The state Senate voted unanimously today to change the name of the Department of Public Welfare to the Department of Human Services.
Supporters say a new name would better reflect what the agency does and remove a stigma sometimes associated with public assistance and welfare.
Public Welfare Secretary Bev Mackereth said last year the change would cost about $8 million and wasn’t affordable, but Gov. Tom Corbett’s office says he currently supports the measure.
The bill goes back to the House, which previously passed a version of the same legislation.
